Wayne school closure official

Weirton Daily Times

MINGO JUNCTION - The fate of Wayne Elementary School was confirmed during Indian Creek's monthly board meeting on Thursday.

Board member Dan Bove addressed the issue, stating the district is committed to providing the best educational programs, facilities and staff to ensure that every child is provided an excellent education.

"The administration and board of education are committed to balancing the fiscal budget and propelling our school district forward," he said. "We review the financial condition of the district and cost savings options on a continuing basis."

The district has lost operating revenue from the state totaling $1.3 million during the last two years, Bove said. As the state legistlators continue to promote educational choice and expand funding for school choice, it is unclear how much funding the district will continue to lose.

"Although our current financial situation makes keeping Wayne open unsustainable, we have made the decision to close the building based on several facets," he explained. "Closing Wayne will enable the district to maximize facility usage, staffing and taxpayer dollars, thereby implementing the most effective and efficient means of educating our children.

"The board has reviewed the numbers with the treasurer and superintendent, and based upon their projections, which include the realignment of staff, there will be significant savings," he continued. "The board has made the decision and voted unanimously to close Wayne Elementary School. That decision will not change."

Bove added the board will continue to work with the parents of Wayne Elementary pupils to ensure a smooth transition.

In other matters, Doug Gosney of Nutrition Inc. briefed board members on the new nutritional standards from the federal government.

"Our district is still one of the most economical when it comes to school lunches compared to many of the other districts in our area," he stated. "The elementary school lunches are currently set at $1.95 while lunches at the middle school and high school are $2.20."
