Brooke Hills Park offering kite-flying, stargazing

April 25, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

WELLSBURG - Area children and their families are invited to an afternoon of kite-flying and an evening of stargazing, both free events Saturday at Brooke Hills Park.

The park will host the Eighth-Annual West Virginia Kite Festival from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the park, with free kites provided to the first 100 children.

Visitors also may visit the park from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to view Jupiter and its four large moons, Saturn and its rings and other otherworldly phenomena.

Those with telescopes are encouraged to bring them, but telescopes also will be shared with participants.

Hot dogs, snacks and drinks will be sold. For information, call (304) 233-4667 or visit www.smartcentremarket.com.

Funded in part by a grant from the West Virginia Space Consortium, the two events are sponsored by the park, SMART-Center, ASTROLABE Astronomy Club, Near Earth Object Foundation, New Era Kite Club, Radio Science News and the SMART Centre Market.

The kite festival is the brainchild of Libby and Robert Strong of the SMART-Center as a way "to engage the public citizen scientists of all ages in an outdoor hands-on activity blending aspects of science, mathematics, art, research and technology with healthy open-air family fun."
