Pray for the nation

May 1, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

The first Thursday in May is set aside as a day to invoke help of a higher power for our communities, our state and our nation.

Thursday marks the 62nd National Day of Prayer in the United States.

A multidenominational service will take place in front of the Weirton City Building. The service, which has been headed locally by the Weirton Ministerial Association, is a moving and spiritual observance that brings people from all walks of life, from various levels of public life, and, importantly in these divided days of governance, people from both sides of the political aisle.

The day's theme for 2013 nationally is "Pray for America."

We can think of no better theme for the year. With turmoil in the streets, an economic recovery that still could go the wrong way and a national government bent more on political gamesmanship than setting long-term direction, prayer is as important an answer as any decision in the ballot box.

Nationally, prayers will be led from 9 a.m. to noon on Capitol Hill.

Locally, events in Weirton begin at noon. A service also is planned to take place at the First Westminster Presbyterian Church on North Fourth Street in Steubenville.

And for those who cannot attend, the National Day of Prayer is being streamed live from Washington at nationaldayofprayer.org.

Take a few moments and see if it's in your heart to ask for help from God to change the hearts of men and women to lead, not just to stand up for their party or their own ideas.
