OVAC track at midway point after Classes 3A, 5A qualify

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The tickets for nine events to Saturday's OVAC Track and Field Championship Meet are set.

The final two divisions - Class 3A and 5A - got into the qualifying act Tuesday evening as the five-day OVAC Track and Field Meet continued under ideal weather conditions at Red Devil Stadium.

Qualifying wrapped up in nine events and the remaining nine get under way today.

The meet resumes this afternoon with remaining field events for the 1A/2A and 4A schools at 4 p.m. and running begins at 5 p.m.

All of the qualifying rounds come to a close with 3A and 5A resuming on Thursday afternoon.

In Class 3A, the River girls had a strong afternoon of qualifying and some of their prime-time events are still to come on Thursday.

Senior standout Cassidy McCullough - who figures to be one of the meet's top scorers on Saturday - owns the fastest time in the field for the 100, blazing down the track in 12.62.

Linsly's Claudia Palmer was the top 3A entrant in the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.89.

The Lady Cadets' 4x800 team also set the pace in its division, running eight laps in 10:42.43.

Bellaire senior Myleah Green turned in a season-best effort in the shot put, marking the gravel in 35-0 to lead the 3A field.

Magnolia's Christa Harshberger paced the 3200 meter field in a time of 13:24.27.

The 3A boys' field was fairly well balanced as five schools grabbed one of the top qualifying spots.

Reigning 2A champion Linsly was led by a pair of talented sprinters. Jamal Ebanks paced the 100 in 11.75. Senior Mike Hammond paced the 400 in 52.53.

The Cadets' crack 4x200 team turned in a 1:32.69 to lead the way.

Barnesville's Jacob Anderson turned in the top time in the highs with a 16.26.

River's Thomas Tharp was the top discus thrower in 3A with a twirl of 130-feet.

In Class 5A, a tight battle appears to be developing between Wheeling Park, Morgantown and even John Marshall on the girls' side. The Cambridge and Wheeling Park boys appear to be setting up for quite a battle on Saturday.

John Marshall's girls had an impressive first day. The Lady Monarchs led two events, including Emilee Winters in the shot put at 36-7.

Senior Ashley Haught turned in the best time of any class in the 400, setting a 5A record in the process, in 57.97.

Wheeling Park frosh Tamara Bumgardner ran a 15.76 to edge John Marshall frosh Tori Derrow by three hundredths of a second.

The Lady Patriots also paced a deep and highly competitive 4x2 field, posting a 1:46.24.

Edison's Katelyn Pollock paced a highly competitive 5A high jump with a 5-2 clearance.

In the boys' meet, Wheeling Park's Bryce Ingram and Albert Schrimp led the way in the 100 and 3200 meters, respectively. Ingram ran a 11.27 and Schrimp posted a 10:14.54.

The Patriots also led the 800 relay qualifying with a 1:33.54.

The Bobcats also led three events, including a 5A and stadium-record performance by Eric Fox in the pole vault. He soared over a personal-best 15-3 to lead the way.
