Join walk, raise awareness

May 2, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Hunger is a problem being faced by more people in every community as problems with the economy continue.

We have been fortunate in our area to have several organizations who work every day to provide food for those in need, and our residents who are able have continued to show their support, even while many who have helped in the past now find themselves in need of help themselves.

Friday morning, a walk will be held in Weirton to help raise awareness of these programs, what they do and the people they help.

Tom Knopp, a resident of Kenova, W.Va., will be in town as part of his effort to walk in all 55 West Virginia counties to raise awareness of hunger issues in the state. He will be at the State Office Building at 7:45 a.m. and begin his walk at 8:30 a.m. We encourage our residents to consider joining him, even if it's only for a short while.

Knopp's goal is to raise $10,000 in each county to help such agencies and programs.

Any funds raised during Friday's event will benefit the Community Bread Basket, one of our local groups which work to fight hunger in the Weirton community.

This is a major issue affected people in West Virginia, across the nation, and around the world.

We thank Knopp for his efforts and dedication to such a cause, and hope to see the residents of all of our communities do what they can to show their support.
