WEIRTON - While the Kentucky Derby was running Saturday evening, the Rotary Club of Weirton was having its own Run for the Roses.

The club's gala, held at Williams Country Club, featured a derby theme, with a drawing based on the results of the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby, as well as a contest for the best hat and live musical entertainment by the Joseph Sisters and the Groove Doctors.

"It's been a beautiful evening," Rotary Club President Mike Gianni said. "We look forward to having everyone next year."

The event serves as the club's biggest fundraiser of the year, bringing in money for a variety of local and international charities and projects.

Locally, the Rotary Club of Weirton uses its fundraising activities to support the Weirton United Way, Boy Scouts of America, the Weirton Salvation Army, and the Weirton Youth Soccer League. Each year, the club also presents a $1,500 scholarship to a student from Weir, Madonna, Brooke and Oak Glen high schools.

The Rotary Club of Weirton also supports Polio-Plus, which works to eradicate polio across the globe.

"Without all of you, this wouldn't be possible," Gianni said in thanking those who supported Saturday's gala.

Gianni also credited Rhonda Quattrochi and the event planning committee for their work in putting the gala together, and thanked the Williams Country Club staff for their work during the evening.
