Eastern Gateway Community College's 44th-annual commencement will be held May 18 and feature guest speaker Joanne Bashford, associate vice president for developmental education and student success at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Bashford has worked with Eastern Gateway since 2005 when the college joined the Achieving the Dream national reform movement to enhance student success in community colleges. She acts as a data coach for the college and provides guidance on initiatives the college uses to help students complete their programs of study.
Graduation exercises will be held under tents in the college's John Scott Highway parking lot on the Jefferson County Campus. Families, friends and the public are invited to the 10 a.m. ceremony.
With 20 years of management/leadership experience in community colleges, Bashford possesses demonstrated commitment to student success through innovative strategies and technology. With her expertise in effective use of data for continuous improvement, she has participated in national projects including the American Association of Communication Colleges' Voluntary Framework of Accountability project development, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Common College Metrics, and Carnegie Statway.
Prior to joining Broward, Bashford worked at Miami Dade College, most recently as associate provost for institutional effectiveness. She led and supervised the offices of institutional research, learning outcomes assessment and college-wide testing programs.
As a consultant, Bashford helps develop faculty and courses.
Bashford earned her doctor of education degree in educational administration and supervision from Florida International University, her master of education in counselor education from University of Pittsburgh and her bachelor of arts in psychology from University of Florida.
Her memberships include Carnegie Pathways Advisory Group, Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center Board, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools on-site evaluator, Association for Institutional Research, American Educational Research Association, Measurement Services Special Interest Group past president, and National Council on Measurement in Education.
