Ladies Aide holds meeting

NEW CUMBERLAND - The Point Pleasant Methodist Church Ladies Aide Met April 10 at the Wylie Ridge church with President Carolyn Allison presiding, calling the meeting to order and introducing Janice Hurley, Weirton Medical Center wellness coordinator.

Hurley introduced Dr. Carol Slomski, medical center breast surgeon, who spoke about common cancers and survival rates, treatments for breast cancer and encouraged cancer screenings. She also spoke about her background and held a question-and-answer session.

Following the presentation, Louanne Huff gave the blessing and members and guests enjoyed dessert and fellowship.

The business session began with lighting the memory candle in honor of those who were unable to attend the meeting.

Huff gave the devotions, reading "Bloom Where You're Planted and Make a Difference," followed by prayer.

Mick Goffoli read the March meeting minutes, and Kathleen McDonald gave the financial report. Members donated to the Sunshine Fund.

Allison distributed the 2013 booklet, including the year's theme, list of officers, rules, fundraiser information, volunteers, hostess duties and contact information.

Nancy Wright reported on the scholarship to be presented at the Oak Glen High School awards assembly. Those seniors interested in applying should see the guidance counselor.

Huff introduce a project to recognize veterans at Weirton Geriatric Center and Fox Crest in Chester. Members were encouraged to prepare a "Sock of Love."

Members made donations to the Wounded Soldiers and New Cumberland Food Closet.

Karen Randolph observed April Autism Awareness Month by giving a presentation on autism.

The group will hold a bake sale during the church yard sale June 8.

Members shared prayer requests for friends, family, students, military members and the country.

The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 8 at the church.
