Knights of the Golden Horseshoe

May 7, 2013
Weirton Daily Times
Zachary Hannah, far left, Alvyn Hernandez, near left, and Levi Mikula, near right, Weir Middle School eighth-graders, were named 2012-2013 Golden Horseshoe winners for scoring among the top four in Hancock County on the Golden Horseshoe exam March 22. The statewide exam tests knowledge of West Virginia history, geography and culture and is held annually to commemorate Alexander Spotswood’s expedition west of the Alleghenies. Spotswood celebrated the completion of the journey by awarding each expedition member a golden horseshoe and naming them Knights of the Golden Horseshoe. Those who earn this award also are named among the knights and receive a Golden Horseshoe pin. The pupils were accompanied to the Golden Horseshoe ceremony May 3 in Charleston by Sandy D’Alesio, far right, Weir Middle West Virginia studies teacher. -- Contributed
