WEIRTON - The Literary Department of the Weirton Woman's Club, a General Federation of Women's Clubs of West Virginia member club, met April 20 at Williams Country Club for the 47th annual Book Review Luncheon.

Book Review Chair Sandra Robbins welcomed members and guests and introduced reviewer Nancy Ellen Rice O'Leary, Club President Diane Pastoric and Department Chair Diana Durst.

O'Leary has done six previous reviews for the luncheon and reviewed "Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child" by Bob Spitz.

Child, born into a wealthy family, graduated from Smith College and aspired to be a writer. At 30, she attempted to enlist in the military during the Second World War, but was rejected for her height - she was six feet tall.

However, she was accepted to the war-time intelligence agency and precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency, the Office of Strategic Services. As an American spy, she traveled the world and met Paul Child, another OSS agent who would become her husband, in Ceylon.

They married in 1946 and he was stationed in France, where Child was introduced to French cuisine, taking classes at Le Cordon Bleu and later opening a cooking school for American women living in France. She also wrote "The Art of Mastering French Cooking."

Her first television appearance was on a local station, where she demonstrated how to cook an omelet on a hot plate. She soon became an educational television star on the Public Broadcasting Service and godmother to modern day cooking shows.

Patty Rhoades gave the inspiration. The Planning Committee, including Minnie Pazich, Barbara Raynolds, Carol Village, Molly Mossor, Pastoric, Rhoades and Sandra Robbins, was introduced.

Helen Brancazio won a copy of "Dearie." Robbins won the 50/50 drawing. Alexandra Melonas won the Kindle Fire HD tablet.

The event included door prizes.
