WEIRTON - Next week, students at Weir High School will be showing how much they know by taking the West Virginia Educational Standards Test, but on Friday it was all about the fun and games.
The WESTEST measures students' knowledge of state content standards. Tests are administered in the areas of science, social studies, math and reading/language arts, and are designed to meet requirements under No Child Left Behind.
Weir High Principal Dan Enich explained the school has been working over the last year to better prepare students for the standardized test, noting the importance of the test in order for West Virginia to receive federal education funding.
"This has been the culmination of a year's effort," Enich said.
Teams representing each grade took part in a series of games, including relay races and one in which a student from each team, without using their hands, had to locate pieces of gummy candy in a whipped cream pie.
The juniors were named the winners, defeating the freshman in a runoff tie-breaker after both teams had won two of the contests.

As an added incentive, Hancock County Savings Bank will be purchasing tickets for a Pittsburgh Pirates game in September for each student who shows growth through the results of the WESTEST. Eighth-grade students from Weir Middle School also were invited to attend the rally.
To further encourage students to do well on the tests, Hancock County Savings Bank is throwing in some extra incentive.
"They are buying tickets for a game in September for all the students who show growth on the WESTEST," Enich said.
Representatives of Hancock County Savings Bank were on hand Friday, as was the Pirates Parrot mascot, who entertained the students between some of the games.
