Police investigating child's head injury

STEUBENVILLE - City Police are continuing an investigation the severe head injuries of a 2-year-old girl, who was flown to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh in serious condition.

Police were called to Trinity Medical Center West on Wednesday about a child with old and new bruises and a swollen forehead. A juvenile detective said the child's father claimed the bruises were there when he got the child from the mother, who lives out of town.

County children services also was called to assist in the investigation.

The detective said he interviewed the child's mother Wednesday night.

The detective said the girlfriend of the father, Alissa Milano, 23, of 610 Pine St. was arrested by the detective on a charge of obstructing official business.

The detective said Milano lied during the investigation.

Man charged in cab driver robbery

STEUBENVILLE - Donald Keeton, 36, of Martins Ferry was arrested by City Police on Wednesday in connection with the robbery of a cab driver.

Police were called to the 2100 block of Sunset Boulevard about a cab driver saying his wallet was taken.

Officers searched the area for the suspect and found Keeton walking on Granard Parkway.

Officers were able to identify him as the suspect because he had left luggage with personal papers in the cab. The cab driver also identified Keeton as the man who robbed him, police reported.

Open house set for Armed Forces Day

WELLSBURG - In observance of Armed Forces Day, an open house for the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor collection at the Brooke County Public Library will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

There will be new items on display related to the experiences of troops defending the Philippine Islands against Japanese invasion and those who were captured by the enemy, including survivors of the Bataan Death March.

Buckeye records commission to meet

DILLONVALE - The Buckeye Local Board of Education's records commission will meet at 5:45 p.m. Monday in the administrative office.

Health board to meet Monday

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Board of Health will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Brooke County Courthouse.

The board will consider approval of the 2014 budget, community implementation plan and annual program plan and discuss the discontinuation of the HEALTHeWV program.

EGCC offering free GED prep courses

STEUBENVILLE - Eastern Gateway Community College offers free GED preparation courses.

The GED test is changing in January and due to this change, anyone wishing to test with the current exam between now and Dec. 31 must be registered for the test by Aug. 8. Anyone who applies after Aug. 8 will be taking the new test in 2014.

EGCC offers the courses on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Classes also are held in Toronto and downtown Steubenville.

Water outage scheduled for some Weirton residents

WEIRTON - The Weirton Area Water Board has scheduled a water outage for residents in the downtown area from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Residents and businesses within the following perimeter will be without water service during that time: From Lee Avenue to Virginia Avenue and from Orchard Street to East Street, including the alley between Main Street and the ArcelorMittal tin mill building.

Following the scheduled water outage, there will be a 24-hour boil water notice in effect for residents and businesses in the area.

Customers in the higher elevations of downtown Weirton may experience loss of water or low water pressure for brief periods during the outage. Customers may experience discolored water throughout downtown. Customers should refrain from washing laundry through Monday morning.

County health department offers weekly nursing schedule

STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Health Department will offer immunizations and tuberculosis testing from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the offices on Market Street.

Manchin staff to visit Northern Panhandle next week

Staff from the office of U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin will visit the Northern Panhandle next week, making stops in Brooke and Hancock.

The staff members are planning to travel to all counties to meet with constituents, hear their concerns and gather feedback, according to information provided by the office. The stops are scheduled for the following times and places:

Hancock County - Noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Greater Weirton Senior Center, 3425 Main St., Weirton; then 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Chester City Building, 600 Indiana Ave., Chester.

Brooke County - 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Follansbee City Council Chambers, City Building, Penn and Main streets, Follansbee; then 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg.
