Large Class AA contingent heading to state track and field championships

CHARLESTON - Many local athletes, most of whom are in Class AA, will compete in the West Virginia State Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the University of Charleston's Laidley Field.

Oak Glen and Weir High are well represented on both sides of the ledger.

Golden Bears senior Alex Burch leads the way. She will compete in the 100 (she qualified third at 12.94 with her season best being 12.78), 200 (3, 26.62), 400 (2, 59.02, 58.78) and be a part of the 4x400 relay team that leads the qualifiers at 4:12.99.

She will face Frankfort's Bria Welker in the three individual races. Welker leads the state at 12.55, 25.84 and 58.32.

Teammate Kelsey Chambers has qualified for the 800 (4, 2:30.63, 2:29.98), 1600 (3, 5:32.56, 5:20.09), 3200 (5, 11:59.57, 11:46.41) and is a member of the 4x800 relay team (3, 10:18.30, 10:01.25).

The 4x800 should be a really good race. The Golden Bears won the OVAC title at that 10:01.25. Rival Weir High finished second at 10:03.92. They are 1-2 in the state.

Also qualifying for individual events for Oak Glen is Megan Collins (400, 7, 1:01.65, 1:01.34), Felicity Nolder (800, 6, 2:32.57, 2:31.59), Christen Mangano (800, 8, 2:34.16, 2:32.10), Tori Feicht (100 hurdles, 12, 17.49; 300 hurdles, 12, 52.70), Kaleena Crane (high jump, 4, 5-0, 5-2; shot put, 9, 31-3), Emmy Delekta (discus, 5, 92-11) and Bridget Bemis (discus, 10, 86-3).

Also heading south are the 4x100 (10, 53.84, 53.47), 4x200 (4, 1:51.73, 1:51.04) and shuttles (3, 1:09.54).

Weir High's Alexis Virtue leads all qualifiers in the 1600 with her 5:22.49, her best of the season. She also qualified in the 300 hurdles (7, 49.78, 49.23).

Distance running mate Kristen Mastrantoni made it in the 1600 (12, 5:47.93, 5:31.33) and 3200 (6, 12:01.36, 11:50.79).

Both are members of the 4x800 relay quartet.

Freshman Kylee Leathers made it in the long jump (4, 15-11 and 100 (10, 13.54, 13.17).

Also qualifying in individual events for the Red Riders are Gracen Hayes (100 hurdles, 8, 17.26, 17.06), Morgan Abbott (shot put, 6, 32-1) and Ontasia Petteway (long jump, 11, 14-5).

Weir also qualified in the 4x100 (8, 53.76, 53,34), 4x200 (6, 1:52.59), 4x400 (3, 4:20.27, 4:16.15) and shuttles (8, 1:11.07).

Frankfort's Katie Jan has the best times in the state this year in the 800 (2:19.70) and 1600 (5:10.83).

For the boys, Oak Glen has two leading qualifiers in Josh Weltner (long jump, 21-6) and the 4x100 (45.15, 45.08).

Also qualifying for the Golden Bears are Micah Swiger (long jump, 3, 19-9), Zack Staley (discus, 5, 135-3, 139-2), Kyle Mack (300 hurdles, 9, 43.16, 42.24) and the shuttles (2, 1:01.51), 4x800 (4, 8:42.50, 8:34.36), 4x400 (8, 3:43.06, 3:40.94) and 4x200 (8, 1:36.25).

The Red Riders' JoJo Rice qualified third in the 100 (11.51, 11:43). He also made it in the long jump (13, 18-8, 19-7).

Cole States qualified in the 200 (13, 24.20, 23.14) and 400 (10, 53.02, 52.24). Clarence Bennett made it in the 100 (10, 11.84, 11.69) and 200 (11, 24.12, 23.35).

Also qualifying for Weir is Kenny Muhart (100, 13, 11.91), the 4x199 (2, 45.37) and 4x200 (4, 1:35.21).

In Class A, Weirton Madonna's Taylor Pavan is back to defend her state title in the discus. She qualified ninth at 89-3 (105-4). She also made it in the shot put (7, 30-5, 32-0).

Chloe Connor qualified in the 400 (13, 1:06.59).

Madonna's five relays also made it - 4x100 (7, 55.32, 54.30), 4x200 (6, 1:55.59, 1:55.34), 4x400 (2, 4:29.69, 4:22.90), 4x800 (7, 11:02.31) and shuttles (10, 1:15.30, 1:12.74).

Marcello Biondillo qualified seventh in the long jump (19-8) for the boys.

Also making it are the 4x100 (12, 47.54, 46.96), 4x200 (6, 1:36.85) and 4x400 (5, 3:45.03, 3:43.72).

In Class AAA, Brooke will send Gavis Lewis (110 hurdles, 10, 16.13), Cody Rine (shot put, 12, 43-1), Mekenzie DeFranco (long jump, 12, 15-2) and the girls 4x100 (12, 52.85, 52.27) and shuttles (15, 1:10.64).
