Pentecost Sunday service planned

The Voice of Pentecost, 106 Mendenhall St., Weirton, will host a special Pentecost Sunday service on May 19 beginning at 5 p.m. with guest speaker, the Rev. Mark Hina, pastor of the Sidney Apostolic Temple.

Pentecost Sunday celebrates the Day of Pentecost, the initial outpouring of the Holy Ghost, as chronicled in scripture in the second book of Acts.

The Voice of Pentecost's choir and Hands of Praise sign group also will participate. The public is invited to this special celebration.

Sveta Petka Kolo plans picnic

The Sveta Petka Kolo held its monthly meeting May 9 at Eat 'n Park in Steubenville, selecting July 24 as the date for the annual picnic with the women of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and St. Andrew's Orthodox Church.

Linda Bain of the Women's Health Center in Jefferson County will be the guest speaker at the next meeting at noon on June 6 at Eat 'n Park to discuss how funds from the Women In Action Against Cancer Coalition are helping local women.

Recording artist at Starkdale

Jeff Anderson, a worship leader, singer-songwriter and a national recording artist from Columbus, will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at Starkdale Presbyterian Church, 4600 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville.

A free will offering will be taken.

The former Gotee Records artist has signed to United Republic\AMA Label Group and recently released his new album "In the Shadow." His Christian hit "Open My Eyes from his album "Seamless," charted top 10 and was nominated for a first round Grammy.

Anderson, who in March was featured as a contestant on the television show "The Voice," was a worship pastor on staff at Vineyard Columbus for four years and prior to that was the young adult pastor for Calvary Chapel Boise. Concert to aid Relay for Life

The Thompson family and friends are organizing a southern gospel concert for Relay for Life in memory of Mabel Thompson.

It will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Scio Presbyterian Church located at 101 N. Eastport St., Scio. Light refreshments will follow in the social room. All donations will be accepted.

Women of Harmony hold banquet

The Mingo Junction Women of Harmony of Harmony United Methodist Church held their 50th-annual Mother and Daughter Banquet at the church's social hall on May 9.

President Mary Joy VanDyne offered welcoming remarks, and Tina Corder gave the invocation.

Following the buffet dinner catered by Manfred's, the program included the toast to mothers by Joyce Hood and the toast to daughters by Betty Hood. The former Women of the Year were recognized.

Joyce Hood, who had been nominated as the 2013 Woman of the Year, was given a Christian musical globe as her special gift for her dedication over the years.

Lillian Criss donated several baskets for door prizes. Ginny Howell and Pam Pietro drew the door prize winners who were Donna Chichick, Mary Joy VanNorman, Patty Wetherell, Michele Robinson, Carol Ely, Katie Waligorski, Chris Davis and Heather Shaffer.

VanDyne gave the benediction.

Power Surge provided musical entertainment.

Jewett UMC to host free dinner

The Jewett United Methodist Church located at 202 W. Main and Rumley streets will host its free dinner Tuesday through the Olive Branch outreach program.

The dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. and feature chicken and noodles, potatoes, corn, dessert and a beverage.

House of Prayer honors mothers

The House of Prayer Church near Brilliant held its Mother's Day services with special presentations made.

A potted flower was given to each mother in attendance with special potted flowers presented to Sarah Reynard, 2013 Mother of the Year; Dotty McGee-Mayle, oldest mother; and Denese Hatcher, youngest mother.

Annual daughters banquet held

In conjunction with Mother's Day, the Toronto North River Avenue Christian Church hosted its annual daughters banquet with Joe Coma serving as event chairman.

There were 63 members and guests attending.

The kitchen committee members preparing and serving the baked steak dinner included Rex Mossor, Bob Freeman, Jim Eckard, Les Grimes, Tom Voll, George Bozman, Travor and Caleb Bozman, David Sutherin and Joe Vucjak.

New minister Luke Hightshue gave the blessing and also assisted on the kitchen committee.

Following the dinner, Kenny Mossor and Rebecca Chandler performed southern gospel bluegrass songs on the guitar in the church sanctuary.
