STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Community Action Council board of trustees heard from one of its own Wednesday afternoon when the Rev. Ashley Steele reported on a series of conversations aimed at combining area resources to combat hunger.
"The Mid-Ohio Food Bank approached us earlier this year about community partnerships to help fight hunger. That agency has a lot of connections with area food pantries in Jefferson and Harrison counties and suggested the series of conversations. We had some really good conversations about what we are currently doing and what we can do in the future," Steele related to the CAC board members.
"We agreed to continue the hunger conversations. Our ultimate goal is to coordinate services and share resources where possible. We want to continue working together to address hunger in our area. Barb West (chief executive officer of the CAC) represented this organization very well. She did a wonderful job," noted Steele.
During the trustees' monthly meeting, the board agreed to apply for $833,484 from the Ohio Workforce Investment area for creek and stream cleanup work in Jefferson County.
"The money is coming from the National Emergency Grant. And we feel fairly confident about receiving the money because the state called us asking if we were interested in continuing the cleanup work," said West.
West also told the board the 2013 H.E.A.P. summer cooling program will be in effect from July 1 through Aug. 31.
"We have not yet been told how much money we will receive this year but in anticipation we will be ordering air conditioning units from M&M True Value Hardware. We have found ordering the air conditioning units through M&M works very well for us. Eligible applicants do the paperwork here and then take their paper to the store where the air conditioner is put into their vehicle," West stated.
West told the trustees 587 job-seekers attended the May job fair at the Fort Steuben Mall.
"The more common job-seeker comments asked for more local employers and less schools, evening hours and more than one day for the job fair. The employer comments focused on an earlier timeframe for the job fair, more advertising and assigned areas for each business," cited West.
She invited the board members to attend the Head Start graduation ceremonies at the local Head Start centers.
The board moved into an executive session to discuss personnel.
