Weirton Daily Times
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 10, with the help of donations from the community, sends local high school girls to the Rhododendron Girls State June 9-14 at Wheeling Jesuit University. During their stay, the students become citizens of a city, county and state, actively making ordinances and laws, enforcing them and administering justice. Girls also will become a member of a political party and will help to develop its platform and campaign in support of its candidates, participating in primary and general elections. As an elected official, students will perform the functions of their office. Girls also will attend seminars on citizenship, leadership and government. Among those taking part will be, from left, front, Theresa Rae, Girls State Orientation Program; Shirley Brecht, Auxiliary President; Gloria Jerrel, Auxiliary Vice President; and Wanda Perrone, Auxiliary Chaplain; and, back, Katarina Alatis, Weir High School; Alisandra Welch, Madonna High School; Ashley Sherman, Brooke High School; Hannah Hinnerman, Weir; and Morgan Goff, Weir. Gianna Anile of Madonna also will participate. -- Contributed
