SOAR?to hold

annual picnic

FOLLANSBEE - The Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees Tri-Valley Weirton Chapter will hold the annual retirees picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 at Follansbee Park.

The event will include guest speakers, a 50/50 drawing and refreshments.

Brooke Soccer

boosters to meet

FOLLANSBEE - The Brooke High School Soccer Boosters will hold their final meeting of this academic year at 6 p.m. June 6 at the Follansbee Branch of the Brooke County Library.

Officers for 2013-2014 will be elected.

All parents of current and future players are encouraged to attend.

Senior Center to

hold fun ride

WEIRTON - The Greater Weirton Area Senior Center will hold their eighth annual Motorcycle Fun Ride June 7, beginning at the senior center located at 3425 Main St.

The night ride registration begins at 5 p.m., with the first rider out at 6 p.m. and the last rider in at 8 p.m. The event includes an open buffet, 50/50 drawing, Chinese auction, white elephant auction and door prizes. Hank Vincent and The Stone Street Station will entertain.

The cost is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger. A dinner ticket is $10

Blue Waves taking

registration

FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Blue Wave youth football organization will hold registration sessions from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 8 and 22 at the practice field located on state Route 2, north of town.

All children aged 7 to 12 are eligible to play. The registration fee is $65.

Practice begins July 15.

Barnett adds book

tour stops

Bob Barnett, a former Newell resident, will discuss his new book, "Hillside Fields: A History of Sports in West Virginia," at two Hancock County functions.

The Newell-Chester Kiwanis Club will hold a reception and book signing at 6:30 p.m. June 11 at the Chester City Hall auditorium. The event will include a book discussion, with a focus on the Major Harris era at West Virginia University and Oak Glen High School's wrestling dominance.

The Mary H. Weir Library will host a reading and discussion at 5 p.m. June 12. The discussion will focus on the "Golden Age" of Weir High School in the 1940s through 1960s and well-known West Virginia sports figures such as Jerry West, Mary Lou Retton and Ron "Fritz" Williams. Weirton's Jim Benedetto and Bob Gracey will be guest signers.

Barnett is a Newell High School graduate and attended West Liberty State College before graduating from Marshall University.

Copies of "Hillside Fields" will be available for purchase at both events with a portion of the proceeds going to the sponsoring organization. "Hillside Fields" was published by West Virginia University Press in May.

Strawberry fest

set for June 12

BULGER, Pa. - The annual Robinson Presbyterian Church Strawberry Festival will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 12 at the church located at 521 Church Lane, off Robinson Church Road.

There will be hot and cold sandwiches, various types of salads and desserts, a Chinese auction, kids' fair and a bake sale.

Elks to hold

burning ceremony

WELLSBURG - Wellsburg Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 1553 will hold a flag burning ceremony at 6 p.m. June 14 at Wellsburg Town Square located between Main and Charles streets.

The purpose of this ceremony is to retire flags worn to a condition they should no longer be used to represent the nation.

Retired flags can be dropped off at the Wellsburg City Building or at the Elks Lodge located at 834 Charles St.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

Colliers UMC sets

Bible school

COLLIERS - The Colliers United Methodist Church will hold the 2013 vacation Bible school from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. June 17-21 at the church located at 318 Pennsylvania Ave./Harmon Creek Road, across from the Colliers Post Office.

Registration will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. June 17-21.

The theme is "Kingdom Rock: Where Kids Stand Strong for God." A light dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m., and children will participate in Bible stories, science experiments, games and songs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The children will present a program for parents June 23.

The program is free.

Italian classes

to begin

STEUBENVILLE - "Italiano per Inizianti," an eight-week introductory course on the Italian language and culture will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays from June 25 through Aug. 13 at Holy Family Catholic Church's Malara Hall located at 2608 Hollywood Boulevard.

Those who have taken Part I of the course may then take Part II and "La Lingua pi Bella Attraverso la sua Musica," a musical journey through time in Italy.

Library holding

naming contest

MCDONALD, Pa. - The Heritage Public Library will hold a Civil War Reenactment Aug. 31 and is holding a "Name-the-Event" contest.

The prize is a private screening of "Lincoln" for 20 people in the new community room.

They also may be dropped off in person at the library located at 52 Fourth St.

Class of '63 planning reunion

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg High School Class of 1963 is planning its 50-year reunion for September.
