WEIRTON - Trey Smith belted a two-run home run and that was all Heath Hildreth needed as he stifled Toronto Post 86 American Legion on five hits in a 2-1 Weirton Post 10 victory Saturday at Ed Bowman Field.
The right-hander from Brooke High School walked only one and struck out five in going the route recording the first win of the season for Post 10.
"Trey Smith came through for us and Heath (Hildreth) pitched very well and that's just what we needed," said veteran Post 10 coach, Bill Magnone. "He threw a lot of strikes. Their pitcher (Tyler) Owens pitched well too. It was one of those quick games where the pitchers threw strikes and there weren't any long innings.
"Smith caught for us last year, too and he added a lot of power to our lineup so, for us, he is just picking up where he left off last summer."
Owens gave up only three hits to the Post 10 lineup, but made a mistake on a 1-0 pitch to Smith, the veteran Weirton catcher.
"Tyler made just one mistake and actually it was a miscommunication between me and the catcher," said Post 86 coach, Larry Glen, who took charge of the team from Steve Sninchak in the sixth inning when Sninchak's son, Spenser, was injured in a rundown play that required him to be transported by ambulance for treatment of an apparent knee injury. "It was a changeup he left up that we didn't want and with one swing of the bat they beat us. But we played a solid game. We out hit them and they had more errors than we did.

"At the same time, Hildreth did a real nice job throwing off speed. He kept us on our front foots with a lot of guys swinging early in the count getting themselves out with his quality pitches."
The Post 10 runs came in the bottom of the second inning when with one out, Matt Cessna doubled and Smith, the next batter, ripped the second pitch he saw, unleashing a towering blast to right center field that easily cleared the fence.
The only other hit that a Post 10 player got off of Owens was a single by Kyle Woodruff in the bottom of the third inning. Woodruff was erased at second base attempting to steal.
Owens walked one and struck out 10 while taking the loss.
Glenn scratched his head about his Post 86 hitters being unable to solve the Hildreth slants especially when they had runners in scoring position a couple of times.
The Post 86 run came in the top of the sixth inning when Blaze Glenn led off with the only walk that Hildreth yielded. He stole second base and raced home when Spenser Sninchak smacked a Hildreth two-out pitch to the right center field fence.
Sninchak rounded first and headed for second, but Post 10 center fielder, Tory Fuscardo quickly retrieved the ball and got it back to the infield catching Sninchak in a rundown. That's when he injured himself.
The win evened the Post 10 season record at 1-1 while Post 86 lost its fourth game in five outings.
Post 86 returns to action today hosting Wayne and Cadiz. Post 10 won't play again till next Thursday at the Hillbilly Classic in Elkins, WV.
