RICHMOND - It has been called a FUNdraising event.
Edison High School will be turned into a summer extravaganza from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday to raise money for the sports programs.
"When I first came to Edison Local, one of the things I thought of was to do a concert to raise money," said first-year football coach Derrick Stickles, who has been on the job since January. "It didn't fly as well as I would have liked, so we started throwing ideas around. We wanted to get the community involved and we wanted everybody to have a good time while we raise money for the sports programs.
"We think this will get people out, have some fun and show them what Edison Local is all about."
The community affair will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a concert featuring Vanilla Sounded Chocolate to begin at 7 p.m.
The events are, but not limited to: cow patty bingo, inflatable amusements by Movin and Groovin Productions owned by Anthony Bailey, game stations, dunk tank and a rock wall. Food and beverages will be available.
Each team is in charge of a certain area for the day. The teams will also have tables set up to sell spirit wear and other items.
Cow patty bingo tickets are on sale at $10 per square.
First prize is 15 percent of tickets sold. Second prize a lawn mower donated by Vernon Dell, and third prize a chainsaw donated by Pytash Tractor Sales.
Parents may purchase a $10 wristband for unlimited access to the inflatables - the rock wall and dunk tank are extra.
Each athletic team is responsible for donating a basket for a drawing or to be auctioned. The money raised will go toward participation fees for athletes, uniforms, team needs, etc.
"At the end of the night, all the participating teams will split the funds equally to be used for their choosing of equipment or other needs," said Edison Athletic Director JoAnn Stagani.
This day is not just about the football team.
It is about the sports program at Edison.
"We want the community to be involved and we want them to have fun," said Stickles. "We obviously want to raise money, but we also want the community to see how hard we are trying to change things and make things better for the kids.
"We want the community to see what is going on at our school and how we all want to be at Edison Local for the kids."
All of the sports teams are involved - football, boys and girls soccer, volleyball, golf, wrestling, swimming, boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball, track and field and cheering.
Girls basketball coach Jason Ensinger got the Carrollton Woodsmen of America to match the funds up to $2,500.
"Everyone being involved in this is great for the community and great for our sports programs," said Stickles. "The community involvement is the most important thing. Winning and losing in what we do as coaches is important, but it's more important that we produce productive, outstanding citizens in our society.
"We want to make sure all of our kids know what hard work is and we want the community to see the hard-working kids we have.
"I think this also helps our student-athletes feel they have more ownership in the programs because of that hard work. I know when I tell our football programs how much money we have raised through the spaghetti dinners and other things we have done, they feel a sense of pride.
"Our kids understand they are in a unique situation that other kids do not have to deal with in the pay-to-participate."
The pay-to-participate fee at Edison is $200 per sport.
There is no family cap.
"I still remember when I played football as a freshman (at Oak Glen) I got that free pair of practice spikes and that's a big deal to young kids," said Stickles. "Our kids now in the middle school have to pay $150 to play football.
"It makes me feel bad that kids have to worry about a financial situation at such a young age.
"I told the parents at the first football meeting that while most teams have 10 games, we have 11 and that first game is the pay-to-participate fee. If we can take care of this pay-to-participate fee, we can go 1-0 in Week 1."
Entrance into the concert is by donation.
Vanilla Sounded Chocolate was named the winner of the 2013 Gorilla Music Rex Theater Battle of the Bands in Pittsburgh in April. Band members include Devin Delatore, bass, of Smithfield; Matt Fitzgerald, drums, Mingo Junction; Ty Carney, guitar, Mingo Junction; and Manon Misto vocals, Weirton.
As winners, the band will receive 20 hours of studio time and will perform at Reggie's Music Joint in Chicago on July 3. They also will play at the Cleveland Music Festival in August.
