Equal standards are needed

June 17, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Accusations of a sex crime involving a minor are made to an organization that investigates the charges itself.

Sound familiar?

The Catholic church has been facing head-on the fallout from doing just that for years, but we're not referring to the Catholic church scandal today.

Rather, we're referring to the State Department. We applaud the call from the Office of the Inspector General for outside investigation into the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, with an eye toward whether one part of the State Department has the impartiality to do an effective job investigating the diplomats under State's employ.

The State Department, for its part, denies any cover-ups in allegations of wrongdoing and says that any proven wrongdoing is punished.

We would hope the same strict standards the secular public has set for religious institutions would hold for the nation's diplomatic service.
