From staff reports , Weirton Daily Times

WEIRTON - The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center will be focusing on the family as part of its observance of West Virginia's sesquicentennial on Thursday.

The museum will host a public event from noon to 4 p.m. at its 3149 Main St.., Weirton, location, which will include hands-on activities for local children, a photo booth, cake and other refreshments, an opportunity to look through the museum's displays, and other surprises.

"The first 100 children will receive a gift bag for participating in the celebration," organizer Pam Makricosta said.

Everyone who attends Thursday's event also will have the opportunity to sign a West Virginia 150th birthday celebration scroll. Museum officials plan to include the scroll in a time capsule to be buried Aug. 10 with the dedication of a new historical marker for Cove School.

Museum President Dennis Jones said he will be providing an update on the museum's ongoing efforts to create a "Discover Center" focused on providing activities for children visiting the museum.

This is the first in a planned series of family oriented programs at the museum, which are being organized with support from the Mary H. Weir Public Library, the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh and the Rotary Club of Weirton Heights.
