WHEELING - West Virginia legislators and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin joined with local leaders at River City Ale Works in downtown Wheeling Wednesday to celebrate the Mountain State's 150th birthday.

"We are both reflecting on history, as well as making history," said Wheeling Mayor Andy McKenzie while enjoying the festivities, which extended into the closed-off 14th Street with a live band.

"These legislators will go home, and they will tell people about Wheeling," he added.

Enjoying her time at the gathering was Legislative Joint Committee staff member Shannon Riley.

"I cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism shown by the people who have organized all of this for Wheeling," she said.

Workers at some of the buildings in the 14th-16th Street block decorated windows and buildings for the occasion.

Sen. Jack Yost, D-Wellsburg, said he was impressed with the turnout, both for the block party and the entire schedule of events in Wheeling.

"Wheeling has taken the bar and raised it," he said. "This is awesome."

Yost said some of the legislative committee meetings are getting public participation, which he believes is good for the Wheeling community.

"Everything here is very good," he added.
