Great job, leaders

June 22, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

A community is only as good as those who step forward to lead it.

With that in mind, the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce has spent more than two decades organizing the Leadership Weirton program in the hope of encouraging local men and women to get involved in their towns and guide them into the future.

We congratulate this year's graduating class and wish them well as they take their places among the leaders of the Ohio Valley.

The graduating members of the Leadership Weirton Class of 2013, and their sponsors, are MaryLee Ammon, Hancock County Savings Bank; Larry DeRosa, West Virginia Northern Community College; DeeAnn Greene-Marszalek, Melaleuca - The Wellness Company; Marisa Marino, Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort; Karen Mason, Hancock County Senior Services; Jennifer McHenry, Hancock County Savings Bank; MaryLou Martire-Pittman, Wal-Mart; Renee Salkovick, City of Weirton; Alecia Sirk, Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau; Patricia Soplinski, Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce; and Danielle Welshans, Fairfield Inn and Suites.

A great deal of time and effort is put into this program each year by its participants. In addition to attending a variety of sessions, which they also must plan, the class members also attend local civic meetings and volunteer with an area non-profit organization.

One of the largest portions of the program is the class service project, and this year's group really stepped up by raising money to purchase new flags and stone benches for the Weirton "Honor Roll" veterans memorial on Three Springs Drive. This is the largest project taken on by a Leadership Weirton class to date, and everyone should be proud of what they have been able to accomplish in just a few short months.

We encourage each of you to find some way to continue on this path as you move forward, whether it's volunteering, organizing a fundraiser, running for office or finding a way to beautify your neighborhood.

We also urge others to consider seeing what this program has to offer.

Once again, we congratulate the members of the Leadership Weirton Class of 2013, and look forward to following your continued success.
