Community getting ready to celebrate

Special weekend on tap in Burgettstown

June 26, 2013
From staff reports , Weirton Daily Times

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. - The Burgettstown Community Days will be held Friday and Saturday in the borough building and volunteer fire department parking lot, located at 1507 Main St., and along the 1500 block of Main Street.

"Although this has gone on in some form for many years, this is our 10th year putting this on, and we're glad to have been the next generation to provide this service for the community," said Jim Reedy, co-organizer. "It's a great time for people to come out and see that friend they haven't seen in long time. The community has a long tradition of fairs and community days and people getting together. It's a tight-knit community, so come on out this weekend - come see the vendors, come play games, come eat some great food - it's a good time."

The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday. The Burgettstown Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Boy Scout Troop 1350, Cub Scout Pack 1351 and the Burgettstown Girl Scouts will present the flag. The Washington County Commissioners, 46th District Rep. Jesse White and 18th District U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy have been invited to participate in the ceremony.

The ceremony will be followed by a performance by Bill Chamberlain's vocal students. The event will include live entertainment from several area bands, including Iron Skillet, The Majors, US Kids, Spinning Jenny, Light Touch and Zuke.

Rainbow the Clown will be on hand both days, making balloon animals and performing strolling magic. The Burgettstown Kids Center will host 25-cent bingo, and small games of chance will be available. The event also will include drawings and Chinese auctions.

TNT Pizza will sponsor the fifth-annual eating contest at 2 p.m. Saturday.

There will be 10 participants each in two categories - one barbecue wings for children 18 and under and an adult category for hot wings. The top eaters will be crowned the "Wing Champions of Burgettstown."

"We're very excited about the contest," said Reedy.

Those interested in participating in the contest can sign up at the Kids Center until the contest begins.

Throughout both days, games will be available, operated by volunteers from local businesses, churches and organizations. Volunteers set up and run games in exchange for advertising their business or group.

Any business, organization, club, family or group wishing to help out with manning a game booth to benefit the Community Days Fund is urged to call (724) 947-0744.

"If anyone is interested in volunteering, show up and we'll find something for you to do," said Reedy.

Nearly 50 booths offering craft vendors, novelties, entertainment and food will be available.

"We're aiming at more of a vendor-type sale, with a variety of things to buy," said Reedy. "Come on over and look, we've got many different things, from Avon to candles to jewelry. It's a definite change for us this year. We're looking at more ways to keep the community involved."

Volunteers are needed for set up, operating booths, clean up and tear down.

Those interested in assisting should call (724) 947-0744.
