Energy Express continues success

June 28, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

Another summer has begun, and with it another Energy Express program.

The annual program, with sessions at both Weir and Oak Glen middle schools, began this week. We wish all the students a great summer of learning and the program continued success.

The Energy Express program has grown by leaps and bounds locally, starting at just one site only a few short years ago. These days, the two sites in Hancock County usually fill up quickly, and there is still a demand.

The point of the program is to find ways to continue the learning process for select students during the summer months. The hope is to help those students better retain specific learning skills, in particular reading, so they will be better prepared once the new school year begins in the fall.

Each day, participating students take part in various reading-based educational activities, as well as receive two meals to help guarantee good nutrition during the summer months.

Special guests also are brought in, reading to the students or helping out with some of the activities.

Last year, more than 80 students took part in the program in Hancock County.

Organizers of Energy Express are always looking for assistance or donations to support the program.

Some financial support comes from the WVU?Extension Service, the state Department of Education and various other agencies, as well as local communities.

Area residents also show their support by donating supplies for the activities.

Again, we wish those involved in this year's program continued success as they help these students learn.
