FOLLANSBEE - Norma Pertko, a resident of Genesis Health Care Brightwood Center and formerly of Wellsburg, celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends and Brightwood staff on June 14.
Pertko said one secret to her longevity is hard work. She recalled that when she was 12, her grandmother said she was the best washer with a wash board because she could get out anything.
She entered the work force at age 14, working as a filing receptionist at a local glass house and married the same year. When she was 16, she gave birth to her son.
Asked advice she would give to younger people, Pertko said, "Be confident and own the room" and "Don't drink."
Pertko remains active at Brightwood, where she enjoys bingo and other table games, trivia and exercise, as well as shopping and having her nails done.
A music lover, she enjoys rock and roll and big band music, particularly Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Lawrence Welk.
