Richard Howell

HOWELL, Richard E., 71, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, passed away Thursday July 4, 2013, at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was born July 10, 1941, in Mingo Junction, Ohio, a son of the late Henry A. Howell, Sr. and Hazel M. (Hatcher) Howell Pancoast. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by, his step-father, Harold E. Pancoast; a son, Richard E. Howell II, whom passed away January 23, 2013; and his brother, whom passed away January 14, 2007.

Richard retired in 2003 from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in Mingo Junction after 31 years of service; previously Richard had worked several years at Foote Mineral in Mingo Junction. Richard had been an active member of Harmony United Methodist Church in Mingo Junction before his illness. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry with Pilgrim Lodge 0691 in Steubenville, Ohio; and a member of American Legion Post 0888. Richard belonged to numerous sportsmen clubs, he loved the outdoors and he loved traveling.

Richard is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" (Miller) Howell of Mingo Junction; a son, Raymond E. Howell and his wife Sherry of Mocanaqua, Pa.; a daughter, Wilhelmina K. Swain and her husband Joseph of Glen Burnie, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Janet Howell of Pasadena, Md.; a sister, Nancy Broadway and her husband Donald of North Huntington, Pa.; four grandchildren, Charles Barker, David Howell, Daniel and Tara Howell; and he was loved by his many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his best friend, his dog, Thurston Howell III.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 101 Longview Ave., Mingo Junction. On Monday, friends will also be received at the Harmony United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. until the time of his funeral services at 10 a.m. with Pastor Sam Davis, officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville. After the service at the cemetery, family and friends are welcome to return to the church fellowship hall.

There will be a Masonic Service on Sunday at 6 p.m.
