Senior services announces events

NEW CUMBERLAND - Hancock County Senior Services will host a veterans' benefits workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 9 at the senior services facility located at 647 Gas Valley Road.

A free soup and salad bar will be provided for all those who register by Aug. 7.

The workshop will review benefits eligible to those who have been honorably discharged. Those speaking include Schelley Brooks of the Steubenville Veteran's Service Office, Brenda Lewis of the St. Clairsville Outpatient Clinic, Kathy Hawken of Brooke-Hancock Family Resources Network, Jamie Allen of Weirton Medical Centers Behavioral Health for Seniors and Cindy Davis of Hancock County Senior Services Home and Community Based Services.

A card-making class will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The cost is $3 per person and all supplies are included. The Shutterbug Club will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday. The club meets at 1 p.m. the first Thursday of each month, and members share ideas and techniques for amateur photographers of all skill levels.

A Wii Bowling tournament will be held at 1 p.m. July 11 and 25. Participants compete for a prize.

Lunch and Learn will be held at 11:30 a.m. July 16, and the discussion will examine how music helps in pursuing physical fitness.

"Become a Healthier You" will met at 10 a.m. July 17, and the wellness discussion topic is "Thinking." The program examines the "12 Dimensions of Wellness" through monthly seminar topics.

A bingo extravaganza will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 18. The event will include free bingo, lunch and prizes. A nurse will be available to check blood pressure and sugar levels. This event is sponsored by Netwick Care Center.

Couples billiards and ladies lessons will be held at 1 p.m. July 18 . There is no cost to play. Lessons and couples billiards will be held at 1 p.m. every first and third Thursday of the month.

The Wal-Mart day trip will be held July 25. Call to reserve a seat. Space is limited; those participating must have their purchases fit into two large cloth shopping bags.

"Grandparents, Groovin' and Giggles Day" will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 15. All those seniors with children in their lives are invited to attend a fitness class and nutritious cooking activity and play games. To register, call (304) 564-3801 or (304) 387-3251.

Seniors farmers' market vouchers will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the senior services facility. Those requesting vouchers must be at least 60 years old, live in Hancock County and fall within the income guidelines.

1 p.m. Mondays, line dancing.

1 p.m. Mondays, Panhandle Piecemakers.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays, bingo.

11 a.m. Thursdays, beginning line dancing.

4 p.m. Thursdays, Tri-State Acoustic Music Group. The group performs as a fundraiser for the senior center. The cost is $1.

Fitness classes available include:

10 a.m. Mondays, Walk With Ease. The free program includes 30 minutes of walking accompanied by music.

10 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Everybody's Arthritis Fitness. The free class includes range of motion, cardiovascular, strengthening and balance exercises.

10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and 10 a.m. Fridays, Arthritis Tai Chi. The free program offers join-safe exercises to reduce pain and stiffness and improve flexibility and muscle strength.

11 a.m. Wednesdays, Tai Chi. Frank Lewis instructs the course, which improves balance, flexibility and muscle strength. The cost is $3.

5:45 p.m. Wednesdays, Tae Bo. Susan Clibbens instructs the course, which incorporates martial arts techniques including kicks and punches. The cost is $3.

Healthy Steps will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Fridays from Sept. 11 through Oct. 25. The program utilizes the Lebed Method of slow, smooth movement combined with gentle resistance. The program is designed for participants of all ages and is beneficial to those dealing with lymphedema, ostearthritis and stroke. Those participating may remain seated during the class. The class is free.

The Group Lifestyle Balance diabetes prevention and lifestyle change program holds meetings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each Wednesday at Hancock County Senior Services located at 647 Gas Valley Road.

The program is designed for those at risk for Type 2 diabetes, providing education, encouragement and tools to help participants reach healthy lifestyle goals. It is open to those who are nondiabetic, overweight and 18 and older with pre-diabetes or a metabolic syndrome.

The program includes 12 weekly sessions, four bi-weekly sessions and six monthly sessions. Those participating will self-monitor their weight and track and learn about physical activity and healthy eating.

The senior center offers a fiesta taco salad bar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. A dinner plate costs $4 per trip and includes salad, bread, dessert and beverage.
