It's always nice when we are able to remember some aspect of our history.
The Weirton community gets just that kind of chance on Saturday when it dedicates a new historical marker in honor of Cove School.
The site now occupied by the Weirton Event Center had been the home of a schoolhouse since the late 1800s, when much of the area was still supported by agriculture. Before there was a city of Weirton, before there was even a Weirton Steel, there was a Cove School.
Many Weirton residents attended the school at some point during its history, and we're sure they all have their own special memories to share.
They will have that opportunity Saturday as the historical marker is dedicated right where the school once stood.
The event, made possible by the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center with support by numerous local businesses and individuals, should be a good one and we encourage our residents to take some time to check it out.
There will be a chance to share your stories, meet other Cove School alumni, win some prizes and even sign a banner to be included in a time capsule to be opened 50 years from now.
We thank all those involved in this project to remember our past for those of us in the present and preserve it for those to come in the future.
