Marland Heights Community

Church to hold fall festival

WEIRTON - The Marland Heights Community Church will hold the annual fall festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 21 at the church's ballfield located at 3900 Bright Way.

The event will include food and drinks, games, face-painting and puppets. Several vendors will be on hand, including Avon, Tastefully Simple, 31, Dove Chocolates and Origami Owl. Any vendors interested in participating in the event should contact Joanne Redd at

The church is asking the public to help name the ballfield and shelter. Name suggestions can be made on the church's Facebook page by searching "Marland Heights Community Church." The winning name will be announced at the festival.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will be indoors. The event is free and open to the public.

Library holding preschool

AVELLA, Pa. - Avella Public Library, located at 11 School Court in the Avella Community Center, will sponsor a year-long preschool program this fall.

Classes for 2- and 3-year-olds not attending preschool will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Mondays. Classes will include play, music, dance, learning and socialization. The cost is $45 per month. Classes for 3- and 4-year-olds will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $95 per month.

Shady Avenue Bridge closed

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. - The Shady Avenue Bridge is closed for repair and will remain closed until Nov. 7.

The detour is Main Street to West Market Street; right on Plum Run Avenue, left on West Pittsburgh Street to the four-way stop sign, then right on Shady Avenue. Vehicles weighing no more than three tons may take Main Street to West Pittsburgh Street, cross the County Bridge and proceed to the four-way stop sign at Shady Avenue.

Zrinyi family holds reunion

TORONTO, Ohio - The 60th annual Zrinyi family picnic was held July 7 at Austin Lake Park, with 17 people, representing four generations of Ethel and Michael Zrinyi Sr.'s descendants from Ohio and West Virginia.

The event included swimming, games and viewing photo albums. Victor Zrinyi Sr., 89, was the oldest person in attendance, and Domanic Zrinyi, 4, the son of Victor Zrinyi III and Crystal Zrinyi of Carrollton, Ohio, was the youngest. The 2014 reunion will be held July 6 at Austin Lake.

Fort Vance seeks volunteers

BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. - The Fort Vance Historical Society is seeking volunteers to assist with the collection and organization of old newspaper articles.

The group is holding flex meetings from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through November at the Burgettstown Community Library located at 2 Kerr St.
