Crusaders down Red Knights

TORONTO - Austin Merenoff shot a 1-over 36 Wednesday at Dyer Country Club to be the medalist as the Catholic Central golf team defeated Toronto, 154-209.

Mike Manfresca carded a 37, Nick Ivkovich 39 and Jason Bensur 42 for the Crusaders.

Ben Hlivko led the Red Knights with his 47. Ron Newbold shot 50, Parker Wright 55 and Sante Carducci 57.

Panthers top Red Riders

RAYLAND - Eric Williams earned medalist honors with his 43 Wednesday at BecWood Golf Club as the Buckeye Local golf team beat Weir High, 207-222.

Brennan Czuchran shot 45, Jake Savage 58 and Dan Duill 61 for the Panthers.

Joe Patterson paced the Red Riders with a 50. Tyler Warrick and Austin Paul-Orecchio each carded 51s and Eric Winwood a 70.

Huskies lose opener

EAST LIVERPOOL - The Harrison Central girls soccer team dropped a 6-2 decision at East Liverpool Tuesday in the inaugural game for the program. Raven Cruz and Gina Sadler each had a goal. Sadler and Spencer Blumenschein recorded assists and Cara Young had 19 saves.

Riders to honor 1973 team

WEIRTON - Weir High School will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its 1973 football team's appearance in the Class AAA state championship game during a special ceremony Sept. 13 at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

The team will be recognized between the first and second periods of the Red Riders' game against Edison.

Coached by George Kovalick, the 1973 Red Riders finished the regular season at 9-1. They defeated Madonna in the season opener and lost to Wintersville in Game 2.

Weir then capped off the season to finish third in the state AAA rankings by winning its final eight games against Oak Glen, Wheeling Central, John Marshall, Morgantown, Triadelphia, Wheeling, Brooke and Youngstown South.

In semifinal action at Parkersburg, Eric Frankovitch's 11-yard touchdown pass to Frank Jeter with 17 seconds remaining lifted the Red Riders to a 26-20 comeback victory over No. 2 and previously unbeaten Fairmont West.

One week later, despite surpassing top-ranked East Bank in total offense and first downs, the Riders fell 10-0 to the Pioneers in the championship game.

Junior tennis league to begin

WEIRTON - The second year for the junior tennis program for middle school students throughout the Ohio Valley will be be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Starvaggi Park.

A brief parents organizational meeting will be held prior to practice. All levels of skill players, including beginners are welcome. Come dressed and ready to play. A program for younger players is available also.
