Church to host authors, singers

PARIS, Pa. - The Paris Presbyterian Church has announced upcoming events.

The church will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 6-7 at the church located at 127 Steubenville Pike. The event also will include a bake sale.

Sing-songwriter Joy Ike of Pittsburgh will perform at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the church. Ike performs a blend of soul, jazz and pop and has been named "Best Solo Artist" for four consecutive years by the Pittsburgh City Paper.

The church will hold a blessing of the pets from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21. The Rev. Christina Hosler will give the blessing at 3 p.m.

Homemade treats will be available for pets in the pavilion and for owners in The Gathering Place Coffee Shop. Pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. Those who can't bring their pets are welcome to bring a photo of their pet for the blessing.

Susan Spencer-Smith will participate in a Coffee With the Author event at noon Sept. 25 at the church's Gathering Place Coffee Shop. Spencer-Smith authored "The Preacher Lady's Cookbook" and "Death in the Parsonage," set in Biddlebourne, a fictional take on Middlebourne. The event will include a talk, book signing and refreshments.

The Beyond the Broken Heart Grief Group will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 26-Nov. 14. The eight-week grief counseling session will meet Thursdays. Call Outreach Director Margie Zellars for information.

Colleen Mindzak will perform at the noon Oct. 23 at The Gathering Place.

The church will hold Trunk or Treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 27. Contact Lauren Johnson for information.

Diane Shoup will host an afternoon tea at noon Nov. 6.

A seminar on dealing with grief during the holidays will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 28.

A birthday party for Jesus will be held at noon Dec. 18.

The Gathering Place is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is free and open to the public. Hosts or hostesses are available daily.

A church group meets from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Thursday to make mats for the homeless out of used plastic grocery bags. All are welcome to come and assist, and no prior knowledge is necessary.

A community breakfast is held at 8 a.m. the second Sunday of each month. The meal includes pancakes, sausages, eggs, coffee and orange juice. The cost is $3. The next breakfast is Sept. 8. All are welcome to attend.

The Tri-State Young Adult Group is open to high school graduates through those in their 30s, and meets the second and last Sundays of the month at area churches. Call for information.

The after-school youth program will begin in October.
