Seventh annual Ride for a
Cure set for Saturday
WELLSBURG -The Seventh Annual Ride for a Cure, a poker run to benefit the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society will begin and end Saturday at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall, formerly the Wellsburg Fire Hall.
Registration will be held from noon to 2 p.m., with the first bikes out at 2 p.m. and the bikes to return at 6 p.m. The cost is $20 for motorcyclists and $10 for each additional rider, which includes an end of run dinner with soft drinks and entertainment.
The dinner also is open to non-riders for $10.

Management club to meet
WEIRTON - The Weirton Steel Management Club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Giovanni's Restaurant banquet room.
Members and former member are invited to attend. Dinner and social will be enjoyed.
Tennis league to begin
WEIRTON - A junior tennis league practice will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Starvaggi Park.
This is the program's second year, and middle school-aged students from throughout the Ohio Valley are welcome to join. Players of all skill levels are welcome. Those attending should be dressed and ready to play. A program for younger players also will be available.
A brief parents' organizational meeting will be held prior to the practice.

Pols to hold meeting on ACA
WASHINGTON, Pa. - 18th District Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Washington City Councilman Joe Manning will hold a town hall meeting to discuss the Affordable Care Act at 4 p.m. Sept. 3 at the city council chambers in City Hall located at 55 E. Maiden St.
"There are complex issues that will be facing business leaders, and I wanted to ensure they had enough information as possible so that they'll be prepared to deal with this new law," said Manning.

School employees to meet
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County School Employees will hold a meeting at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at the Franklin United Methodist Church located on Washington Pike.
All new and past retirees are invited to join the group. Those attending are encouraged to bring a colleague.
The year's group community service outreach project is supporting the Brooke County Schools take-home food program and the Brooke County Animal Shelter.
Lunch will be served, and a business meeting will follow. Brooke County Schools Superintendent Kathy Kidder will be the guest speaker.

Lesho receives scholarship
MILLINGTON, Md. - Allesandra J. Lesho, the daughter of Pavel T. Lesho, formerly of Weirton, and granddaughter of Edwin and Jackie Lesho of Weirton, received a First Slovak Catholic Ladies Association scholarship.
Lesho is a Kent County High School graduate.
She plans to attend Drexel University in Philadelphia and study biomedical engineering.
Entries sought for cutest baby
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service will hold a cutest baby contest during the Brooke County Fair.
There will be two age categories: under 12 months and 12 to 24 months, and children must not have reached their first birthday by Sept. 1 for the first category or second birthday by that date for the second category.
Participants must enter a large coffee can bearing a photo and name of the child no later than 8 p.m. Sept. 6, the first day of the fair. The can should have a lid with a slot for fairgoers to cast 25-cent votes and may be brought to the extension office at 840 Charles St. Sept. 5 or to the 4-H tent on the fairgrounds at Brooke Hills Park no later than 8 p.m. Sept. 6.
Fairgoers may cast one vote for a quarter or multiple votes for $1 or more. Trophies will be presented to the two winners at 5 p.m. Sept. 8 on the fairgrounds, but winners need not be present.
The $3 entry fee for participants and proceeds from the votes go to the Brooke County 4-H program.
