Venues get new ticketing service

WHEELING - Tickets to events at WesBanco Arena and the Capitol Theatre in Wheeling now must be purchased through a new provider.

Etix of Raleigh, N.C., has taken over ticketing, distribution and online marketing services for both venues, Dennis Magruder, executive director of the venues, announced Tuesday. The partnership with Etix replaces the venues' past agreement with Ticketmaster.

The change comes at no cost to the arena or the theater, Magruder continued, and Etix will provide all the computer technology, hardware and support needed for marketing events at the sites.

Etix will make its money through its sale of tickets, but company officials present in Wheeling Tuesday said the overall cost of tickets should decrease under Etix.

"Because they are a smaller corporation with the latest technology, they can provide us that technology at the lowest possible price," Magruder said. "There will be service costs, but we're in the position where we think we can control those service costs."

Travis Janovich, founder and chairman of Etix, said his company is one that likes to work with the community, and he added he was impressed with the community involvement he saw in Wheeling with the attempts to renovate both the WesBanco Arena and the Capitol Theatre.

"We want to make more money, but it's always about doing a better job, building relationships and giving back to the community," Janovich said.

The switch in vendors became effective at midnight Aug. 29, Magruder said. Those seeking to purchase tickets for either Wheeling venue online through Ticketmaster now get a message telling them to contact the WesBanco Arena box office.

The box office remains open as always for ticket sales and information about upcoming events, Magruder continued. But tickets also can be purchased online by going directly to the websites for WesBanco Arena at wesbancoarena.com or the Capitol Theatre at capitoltheatrewheeling.com.

Tickets also can be purchased by mail, but those doing so should first call the WesBanco Arena box office at 304-233-4470 for information and procedures, he said.

The new technology utilized by Etix should keep ticketbuyers from being rerouted to third-party services that charge as much as three times the cost of tickets, he noted. The rerouting had been a problem for those wanting to buy tickets to events in Wheeling.

"What Etix brings to us is a cutting-edge, state-of-the-art, web-based ticketing system," Magruder said. "Our partners are the Wheeling Nailers and the Wheeling Symphony. We shopped for a long time for a ticketing solution for our partners and our customers, and we think this is it."

He said Doug Campbell, box office manager at WesBanco Arena, worked throughout the Labor Day weekend in the office alongside Dennis Scanlon, vice president of sales for Etix, to make the transition to the new ticket vendor.
