Club eyes upcoming events

NEW CUMBERLAND - The Woman's Club of New Cumberland, a General Federation of Woman's Clubs of West Virginia member organization, met Sept. 3, at the Swaney Memorial Library for their first meeting for 2013-2014.

President Dorothy Hawkes presided, welcoming members and guest Carol Village of the Weirton Woman's Club.

Secretary Patty Fisher read the inspiration "Nothing Should Decide Us" from "One World, One Heart" by Stephen Schutz. Hawkes led members in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and "A Collect for Club Women."

Patty Fisher read the April and May meeting minutes and correspondence. Treasurer Alice Mitchell read the financial statement, noting money had been sent to Camp Kno-Knoma. An audit will be conducted.

Hawkes distributed the club constitution, by-laws and calendar to members. to all members and pertinent information to chairs.

Members discussed the New Cumberland River Fest, Northern District Style Show and fall convention and the Hancock County Arts Council Holiday Tour. The River Fest will be held Sept. 28-29, and the club will hold a drawing for a basket of Hancock County merchandise. The style show is Sept. 29 at the Holiday Inn - Weirton, and the fall convention will be held Oct. 12 at the First Presbyterian Church in Moundsville. The holiday tour will be held Nov. 16 and include the McConnell home in New Cumberland and Pettit home in New Manchester. The club will host a reception at the Swaney Memorial Library.

Arts Chair Terri Fisher reminded club members to bring art and craft projects to the October meeting for judging. Winning entries will be taken to the fall convention to be judged, with winners going to the state convention in March.

New Cumberland Mayor Linda McNeil requested the club's assistance in compiling a resource manual for the city, and club members agreed to the request.

The Executive Board provided refreshments. Shirley Weinbert won the traveling door prize.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Swaney Memorial Library. Anyone interested in joining is invited to attend.
