NEW MANCHESTER - The Hancock County Animal Shelter, 715 Gas Valley Road, will be open on Sunday and closed on Monday starting Sept. 22. Office hours will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Public hours during the rest of the week - Tuesday through Saturday - will remain the same at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Shelter board members decided to open the shelter on Sunday to better accommodate the schedules of county residents, many of whom have said they are able to visit the shelter on weekends only.
"It is our hope that increasing weekend hours will help the shelter obtain more adoptions as well," shelter spokesman Tom Goff said.
The shelter currently has a moratorium on accepting new cats and kittens. To address the increased cat intake, the shelter is running low-cost adoption specials on cats and kittens through Sept. 30.
Cat adoptions, normally $80, are now $25, and kitten adoptions, normally $100, are now $50. The fee includes spaying or neutering and shots.
Goff said the shelter hopes to be able to accept cats and kittens again soon.
"We would like to thank the residents of Hancock County for their patience while the shelter works to find homes for the cats and kittens currently in their care," he said.
