FILIPPI, Louis (Luciano), of Smithfield, OH, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2013.

Louis was the son of Celeste Filippi and Maria Marcolina. On July 4, 1928, Louis was born in the commune of Frisanco, which is located within the province of Pordenone, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. He immigrated to the United States on April 7, 1938, at the age of nine years, and made his home in Jefferson County, OH.

Louis graduated from Smithfield High School in 1948 and married Irma (nee: Soka) Filippi on June 18, 1955. They resided in Smithfield, OH.

Louis was employed as a butcher and eventually manager of the meat department at the Smithfield Co-Op, where he worked for 36 years from 1948 until 1984. He was subsequently appointed as the assistant superintendent for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Louis was an exceptionally active member of the community, particularly relative to state and local politics. He was elected as a Smithfield Township Trustee in 1962 and would retain the position for 24 years until 1986. An influential member of the local Democratic Party, Louis served as a member of the Democratic Precinct Committee and chairperson of the Smithfield Democratic Precinct. He played a critical role in regional campaign efforts to successfully elect and re-elect former governor of Ohio, Richard F. Celeste in 1982 and 1986, respectively.

Louis was a member and councilperson of the Upper Ohio Valley Italian American Club. He was also a member of the Italian American Culture Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and he served as vice president of the Smithfield-Piney Fork Parent-Teacher Association and president of the Lions Club. In addition, Louis was appointed by the Jefferson County Commission as a member of the Mental Health Board and Friendship Park Advisory Committee. Among his many accomplishments were his contributions to the establishment of a United States Post Office in Smithfield and the development of Route 250 from Rayland to Cadiz, Ohio.

Louis was a beloved and compassionate family man, an admirable member of the community and a distinguished politician. He will be missed by all.

Louis leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Irma Filippi of home. Louis is also survived by his son, Andrew Filippi and his wife Diane, of Cadiz, OH, son, Douglas Filippi and his wife, Michele of Smithfield, OH, son, David Filippi and his wife, Janet of Dover, OH; grandchildren David Filippi, Jr. and his wife, Nicole, and Tiffany, Gabriel, Amanda, Luke and Dennis Filippi, Luke Smith and his wife, Jessica, Scott Smith and his wife, Ashley, and Aaron, Isabella and Maggie Fabian; great- grandchildren, Grace, Lola and Louden Smith.

Friends will be received at J.E. Foster Funeral Home, 107 Hill St., Smithfield, OH 43948 on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Louis will lay in state at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 852 Main St., Wintersville, OH 43953 on Thursday from 9:15 a.m. until the time of his Funeral Liturgy, with Mass taking place at 10 a.m. Msgr. Kurt Kemo will Celebrate the mass.

Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, 94 Mount Calvary Lane, Steubenville, OH 43952.
