Homer Laughlin, Arts Council

holding kids' plate-painting

NEWELL - The Homer Laughlin China Co. and Hancock County Arts Council will host a kids plate painting event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Wells Building, directly across from the Fiestware Outlet Store.

The first 200 children to arrive will design and paint their own plates. The plates, supplies and plate firing are donated, and those assisting are volunteering their time; there is no charge.

Homer Laughlin produces Fiestaware, the last U.S. china product to be made solely in the United States.

Library to show films

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will show "Iron Man 3," rated PG-13, at 1 p.m. Tuesday and the PG-rated animated film "The Croods," at 5 p.m. Oct. 10.

Group holding 'Night at the Museum'

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - The Tri-State Writers Society will hold the monthly meeting, "Night at the Museum," at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson County Historical Association Museum located at Fifth and Franklin avenues.

Barry Bardone, association board member, will give a flashlight tour of the museum. Collin Michael McGee, association member and author, will give a reading of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven."

Members were asked to write a short story featuring a murder at the museum, and those who have completed their stories will share them at the meeting.

The meeting also will include a meal, and members are asked to contribute $5 each.

Published and aspiring writers of all genres are welcome to attend the meeting.

Club to hold poetry forum

NEW CUMBERLAND - The Oak Glen Middle School Culture Club will host the fourth annual poetry forum, "An Evening With Sylvia Plath," at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the middle school library.

Hancock County Schools Teacher of the Year Lynn Elliott will portray Sylvia Plath as the life and works of the American writer are examined.

The public is invited to participate in the program's open reading portion, which will feature 20th century American poets.

Admission is free.

Roast beef lunches to be sold

WELLSBURG - Christ Episcopal Church, at 1014 Main St., will sell roast beef lunches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10.

The cost is $6.50, which includes a sandwich, chips, beverage and a slice of Hawaiian sheet cake. Individual sandwiches are $4.50.

Take-out and delivery to local businesses and shut-ins is available by calling (304) 737-3432 after 8:30 a.m. that day.

Whiteman to perform Oct. 13

NEW CUMBERLAND - Marvin Whiteman, singer-songwriter and pianist, will perform at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Oakland Presbyterian Church located on Wylie Ridge Road.

Whiteman became a Christian in 1980 and worked for the International Christian Braille Mission before leaving in 1996 to pursue a music ministry. He has been a song leader at revivals, retreats, church meetings, vacation Bible schools, church camps and dinners.

Fellowship will follow in the church's fellowship hall.
