Interim head football coach named at Oak Glen

October 9, 2013

NEW CUMBERLAND - Five days after a fight marred the Oak Glen-Weir High football game, the Golden Bears have an interim coach.

Oak Glen High School Principal Barbara Logue said offensive coordinator Jason Kekseo has been named interim coach, but she would not discuss the status of head coach Ian Whittington.

"No one got fired," she said. "(Kekseo) is going to lead the football team for the next four games."

Logue met with Superintendent Suzan Smith on Tuesday to discuss the results of her investigation into the melee that followed Friday night's game and said Smith accepted her recommendations. She would not elaborate.

Logue said Whittington, a 2003 Oak Glen graduate who was in his second year as head coach, will continue his duties as a physical education teacher at the high school.

An Oak Glen football player also was disciplined, but, again, Logue declined to discuss details.

Smith also declined comment, saying she was prohibited from speaking because it was a personnel matter.

Weir High football coach Tony Filberto said he was not aware of any Weir students or coaches being disciplined.

Asked about his status as head coach, Filberto said, "We're practicing for Friday's game. ... We walked off the field Friday night and immediately started practicing for week seven. We tell our kids, 'When you walk on the field on Monday, whatever happened on Friday is over - win or lose.'"

Kekseo came on staff with the Golden Bears as Whittington's offensive coordinator at the start of the new school year. He was head coach at Weir High for the 2011 season, when the Red Riders went 1-9. He was succeeded in 2012 by Filberto, who had been head coach at Oak Glen.

Filberto's Golden Bears lost to Kekseo's Red Riders in 2011 by a score of 48-6.

Weir High School Principal Dan Enich could not be reached for comment. Whittington did not return phone calls seeking comment.
