Farm Bureau committee hears updates on variety of projects

October 11, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

A review of activities accomplished over the summer was held when Mary Ellen Grafton presided over the meeting of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau promotion and education committee at Zalenski's Family Eatery and Pub. Grafton reported on planting flower beds at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds for the fair and planting with a group of young men from a work force. The cupcake war went well, despite the fact that one group had to drop out because of an injury.

Pennies for Friendship were collected, and the American Federation of Farm Bureau approved "The Guardian Team" book will be purchased and presented to the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County sites, along with Amsterdam, Dillonvale, Adena, Toronto, Tiltonsville and the Bookmobile.

A canning seminar was held at the Farm Bureau office in the old Bantam Ridge School, and the 100th anniversary of the Ball canning jar was observed, with the historic jars and a Ball canning cookbook presented to those attending.

Grafton stressed the need for members to attend the Farm Bureau meeting at the New Philadelphia Methodist Church regarding the consolidation of some of the county offices due to the cost of administration and rent as this is two-thirds of the budget. Jack Fisher will be the guest speaker.

Members of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau were assigned to make pies for the event.

The printing of place mats for Farm City Week, to be observed Nov. 22 through 28, were discussed, along with members assigned to distribute them to local and area restaurants.

The annual Christmas luncheon was planned and will be held in the gymnasium of the Bantam Ridge School. The date of Dec. 2 or 9 will be chosen.

A woman's retreat for four counties will be held in the fall of 2014 at the Carlisle Inn, it was noted.

The meeting Wednesday will be an evening event with meetings to be staggered between morning and night to try to accommodate members who work during the day.
