Free tennis program

October 21, 2013
Weirton Daily Times
St. Paul School and the city of Weirton joined with the U.S. Tennis Association to offer a free tennis program, which celebrated Nickelodeon’s 10th annual Worldwide Day of Play. The Day of Play was held in September, National Childhood Obesity Awareness month, to encourage kids to be active by offering events designed to showcase how fun and easy it is for families to get fit, while also providing a way for parents to spend time with their children. St. Paul School’s tennis program was awarded a $2,000 grant from USTA for equipment or to defray the cost of offering their after-school tennis program and the junior tennis league as well as expanding those programs. The after-school program has begun at St. Paul School, and the junior tennis team will continue to practice from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through October at Starvaggi Park. Students in grades four through eight, regardless of the school they attend or their skill level, can participate in junior tennis league by registering at the park on any Wednesday. Homeschooled children also are eligible. Organizations or schools interested in establishing an after-school tennis program should contact Sandi Gajtka at (304) 723-8184 or Sue Wesie at (304) 224-1892. -- Contributed
