Students make a difference

October 30, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

It is always good when our younger residents make an effort to contribute to their community, especially when it has the potential to assist many of those living here.

That's exactly what students from two of our local high schools did recently in observance of Make A Difference Day, a national movement where people everywhere are encouraged to take part in projects aimed to improve their communities.

We often hear of students taking part in school projects to make a difference in their community, and it's good to see those happen. In this instance, however, we especially should take note as it involved students from two of our high schools joining forces. Members of the Interact clubs from Weirton Madonna High School and Weir High School came together in the spirit of their clubs and Make A Difference Day to collect food and clothing items to assist those in need in our area.

Dubbed "Soup, Socks & Smiles," the students spent much of their Saturday going door to door and collecting non-perishable food. Collections also were held at their respective football games Friday and Saturday.

Anyone stopping by the Weirton Event Center on Saturday could plainly see the result, with several picnic tables covered in boxes of donated food.

We applaud these students for their impressive efforts, which locally will benefit the Salvation Army and the Community Bread Basket.

These two organizations work tirelessly to assist those in our community who otherwise might not be able to have food or other essentials for themselves or their families.

In addition to the students' door-to-door collection, several local businesses - including Kmart, Wal-Mart, Kroger, Mainstream Physical Therapy and Tudor's Biscuit World - held collections of clothing and food to put toward the effort.

Everyone involved should be commended for such an amazing effort and we hope this serves as inspiration for others looking to give back to their community and help others.
