The Wellsburg Elks Lodge has provided many copies of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Gettysburg Address and the Monroe Doctrine to the Brooke County School District for use in the classroom. The group also has donated copies to the Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch. On hand for the presentation were, from left: Valerie Smith, the school district’s curriculum director for grades 6-12; Superintendent Kathy Kidder-Wilkerson, Jeff Cionni, the lodge’s exalted ruler; and Roy Givens, long-time member of the lodge. The lodge is involved with various youth-oriented activities, including an essay contest in which youth are invited to write on a patriotic subject, a hoop shoot contest, the naming of Elks teens of the month and year and scholarships awarded to Brooke High School graduates. -- Warren Scott
