Upgrade your vocabulary with these words:

Seminal - influential, highly original.

Trigamy - having 3 wives or husbands at one time.

Prima facie - at first sight.

Pro bono publico - for the public good.

Perspicacious - having keen judgment.

Persona non grata - a person who is not welcome.

Salacious - erotically simulating.

While visiting my son, Brad, in Parma, Ohio, (he's a Weir High grad), I had my first opportunity to watch the movie, "Super 8," filmed in Weirton. It was a fun movie, in terms of identifying neighborhoods where parts of the movie were filmed. Dennis Jones, president of the Weirton Museum, did an outstanding job of talking about the filming, as well as the history of the city. Toward the end of the movie, I spotted the "James Locke Jewelers" neon sign which came from East Liverpool, Ohio. It was a Steven Spielberg movie - he's one of my all-time heroes in view of his production, "Saving Private Ryan," my choice of the best film in history.

Five quotes to savor:

"We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves." Budda.

"There can be no joy in life without joy in work." Thomas Aquinas.

"When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your strength.

"Give thanks for our food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself." Tecumseh.

"Friendship: one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out." Winchell.

On leadership: "He must know, must know that he knows, and must be able to make is abundantly clear to those about him that he knows." - Randall.

Good thought: "Today is the oldest you've ever been, yet the youngest you'll ever be. So enjoy this day while it lasts."

A classic line by a noted football coach about an opponent: "They cut us up like boarding house pieand that's real small pieces."

According to my records, The Weirton Daily Times became a daily newspaper in 1928 - 85 years ago. A fire leveled the building and destroyed the equipment in 1929. A new newspaper plant was built on Lee Avenue, downtown. Eventually The Weirton Daily Times moved its offices to the Herald-Star in Steubenville.

Overheard: "What she requires in a man is fiscal fitness."

Patrick Ford of the Business Development Corporation impressed with his speech at the Weirton United Way luncheon on Nov. 1. Over the years, I have visited all offices of United Way agencies. All do excellent work. All deserve a helping hand. Give generously this year. You'll be blessed!

Overheard: "I'm not into exercise. To me, a barbell is something you ring when you want another drink."

A good football quip:

Bear Bryant, formerly of Alabama - "It isn't necessary to see a good tackle - you can hear it!

Old is not all bad. There are old songs, old movies, old poemsand old friends!
