Givens deserving of W.Va. honor

To be named a Distinguished West Virginian is an honor like no other in the Mountain State. It is awarded by our governor in recognition of years of service and unparalleled contributions to the state and its people.

Such an honor was presented last week to former Del. Roy Givens, and we believe it is fitting recognition for all he has done for his community, county and state.

Givens spent a total of 26 years as a member of the House of Delegates, representing the residents of Brooke County. This is not only a lengthy and remarkable milestone, but also a record in the House.

During that time, he has served with seven governors, five House speakers and secured $60 million for a variety of projects, including the expansion of state Route 2, the expansion of the Brooke County Public Library, the creation of the Brooke Pioneer Trail and assisting the Brooke County 4-H, Brooke County Senior Center and local police and fire departments.

Givens also has given to his country, serving as an Army medic during the Korean War.

His time of military service inspired much of his time in office, during which time he also assisted efforts to secure funds for the construction of the state's first veterans nursing home, establish the West Virginia Woman Veterans Memorial and provide free license plates for veterans who were prisoners of war.

His service also wasn't limited to the state level, as Givens also spent 10 years on the county's school board, during which time Brooke High School was completed, and assisted with the securing grants for upgrades to the county courthouse and the transfer of buildings from the Windsor Coal Co. for the county's new animal shelter, the emergency management agency and solid waste authority's recycling program.

It truly has been a lifetime of helping others for Roy Givens, and he more than deserves such recognition.

We join local residents and officials in applauding his distinguished career of service.
