Helping the poor at Thanksgiving and beyond

November 17, 2013
Weirton Daily Times

To the Editor,

God's Word (also known as the Bible) clearly teaches us in James 2:14-18, "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works."

Now, works do not save us. There is nothing we could ever do to deserve salvation and to, therefore, spend eternity in heaven. Works are the result of salvation. Our good works are a reflection of our salvation. So as born-again Christians, we do not do "works" to get saved. We do works because we are saved.

So I'm appealing to all Christians to allow God to show His love through you this Thanksgiving season by helping the poor. What a great way to show God our thanks to Him by helping those who need our help.

I am a part of a local contemporary Christian band called Led By Mercy. We are hosting a free Thanksgiving benefit concert at Mercy Baptist Church in Weirton, on Saturday, November 23, at 7 p.m. The concert will be two hours in duration and feature our original contemporary Christian music, the music of the leading contemporary Christian artists, and scripture. We will spend the evening thanking God for his many blessings. This is a free benefit concert, so we encourage you to consider bringing a canned food item or any other donation that we will take to the local food pantry to feed the poor for Thanksgiving.

Thank you so much for considering this, and may you have a blessed Thanksgiving.
