WEIRTON - The Weirton Christmas Parade is set for Saturday, and the Weirton Police Department is issuing some reminders for those coming into the city's downtown to watch the festivities.
The parade, organized by the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and with a theme of "A West Virginia Christmas," is set to begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Beginning at 5 p.m., Main Street will be closed to traffic from Marland Heights Road to Pennsylvania Avenue. The closure will last until after the fireworks display following the parade.
In addition, the 3000 blocks of Elm and West streets will be restricted to only parade units and residents living in those areas. No traffic will be permitted from 5 p.m. until the end of the parade.
Motorized units taking part in the parade will form on North Main Street, with marching units assembling on Virginia Avenue and the parking lot of the old Jimmy Carey Stadium.
No parking will be permitted on Main Street, between Virginia Avenue and Marland Heights Road, from noon until 10 p.m. Saturday. Parking also will be restricted on Virginia Avenue.
Vehicles left parked in these areas will be towed at the expense of the owner, according to information provided by the Weirton Police Department. Traffic on Virginia Avenue will be restricted to parade participants only.
