Community party at Two Ridges

Two Ridges Presbyterian Church, 1085 Canton Road, Wintersville, will host its annual Community Christmas Party and Tree Lighting beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday.

"Everyone is invited to gather for the singing of Christmas carols led by the church choir and Joe Zamberlan," an event spokesperson said.

"Everyone will gather in the front yard of the church around the Christmas tree where church member Gloria Kotur will turn the switch to light the tree and nativity scene that adorns the front yard."

A party will follow in the church fellowship hall with cookies and punch, and featured guest Santa Claus presenting gifts for all the children.

"The Christmas tree and lighted nativity scene will be part of the church's gift to the community during the Advent season," the spokesperson added.

cookie tray sale

The House of Prayer Church on Riddles Run Road below Brilliant, township Road 163, will hold a Christmas cookie tray sale to raise money for the church's fuel oil.

The prices range from $15 for five dozen assorted cookies and $30 for 10 dozen assorted cookies. Orders need placed by Sunday by calling (740) 282-2362. Orders can be picked up and paid for on Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at the church.

The cookies are "freshly baked and bagged to be put out or into the freezer."

Christmas cantata

twice on Sunday

The Adena Lions Club will present "A Christmas Masterpiece" Christmas Cantata 2013 at 2 p.m. on Sunday at St. Casimir's in Adena and again at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Harrisville.

A love offering will be collected to benefit the Adena Food Pantry, which serves the Adena/Harrisville areas.

Soup sale at

Weirton church

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church at 604 Colliers Way, Weirton, across from the Weirton Medical Center, will hold a soup sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Soups available will be stuffed pepper, chili, baked potato, chicken and dumpling and vegetable.

The cost is $6 a quart.

Gyro sale set

for Tuesday

The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society will have its next gyro sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church located at 300 S. Fourth St., Steubenville.

The gyro sells for $6 each and the koulourakia (twist cookie) is $5 per dozen.

There is free delivery for order of four gyros or more. There will be a 25 cent charge for extra tzatziki sauce.

Orders can be phoned in to (740) 282-9835 or fax to (740) 282-2091. Patrons should allow a minimum of 20 minutes for phone-in and fax orders.

Walk-ins also are welcome.

Buddy Breakfast

Fellowships set

The Christian Brotherhood of Second Baptist Church will present the first of four Buddy Breakfast Fellowships beginning at 9 a.m. on Dec. 14 in the fellowship hall of the church located at 717 Adams St., Steubenville.

"Christian men are urged to attend and bring a young man from the community - a son, nephew, grandson, a neighbor or a friend," a spokesman said.

"This is another effort, along with others, to bond and close the communication gap. We want to present positive men from the Upper Ohio Valley as examples and encouragement for our young men," the spokesman added.

Special guest for the first breakfast are "ex-pro ballers and community mentors" Robert "Bob" Kelly and Coach Perry Jeter.

A $10 donation will help fund Christmas efforts and Brotherhood ministry, the spokesman added.

Concert Thursday at Cadiz church

The Cadiz Presbyterian Church, located on West Market Street, Cadiz, will present the Deuces Wild Band in a Christmas concert on Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m.

Founded by Dan Jones and Stephen Kelner, the band started as an acoustic duo just off campus of Ohio State University in the late 1990s. "It has since developed into a full band arrangement, including percussion that focuses on originality and professionalism," according to a press release.

The band specializes in numerous genres, including classic, southern rock, country and bluegrass. Band members include Jones on fiddle, guitar, harmonica and vocals; Kelner on rhythm guitar and vocals; Brian Dawes on bass guitar; Carl Besece on mandolin and vocals; Dustin Kinsey on piano and organ; and Mark Sambuco on drums

Refreshments will be served, and a love offering will be taken. The concert is open to the public.

Cookie sale at

Colliers church

Olde St. John's Episcopal Church, at Eldersville and St. John's roads, Colliers, will hold a Christmas cookie sale from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 15.

Visitors may choose from a variety of cookies suitable for holiday entertaining or Christmas presents. There also will be taco in a bag and food sold for lunch and gently used Christmas ornaments and other decorations for sale.

PJ party with Santa scheduled

A pajama party with Santa Claus will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Meadowbrook Church of Church of God located at 10152 state Route 150, Rayland.

"Come and hang out with Santa Claus in your jammies and bring your favorite stuffed animal," a news release notes.

Tickets are $5 and include a snack and hot chocolate and a gift from Santa. Children 1 and under will be admitted for free. Participants can get their picture taken with Santa Claus for $5.

There will be a Chinese auction featuring a variety of baskets in addition to a cake walk, crafts, games, someone to read Christmas stories, a balloon artist to make balloon art and face painting.

Christmas music

program Friday

Open Door Baptist Church located on Eldersville Road in Colliers will present the Chrisagis Brothers, Ron Retzer, Jeff Garrison, Jennifer Galownia and Bob Wolfe in a concert featuring Christmas music for the entire community.

"This is a family Christian event and is open to the public," notes a news release detailing the event set for Dec. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The group will perform traditional Christmas favorites as well as gospel and contemporary Christian music.

Admission is free.

Colliers church to

present cantata

The Colliers United Methodist Church choir will present its 2013 Christmas cantata "Mary, Did You Know?" on Dec. 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

There will be refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus immediately following.

The church is located in Colliers at 318 Pennsylvania Ave. (Harmon Creek Road) directly across from the Colliers Post Office.

Mingo church has

holiday nut rolls

One of the tastier holiday traditions will be renewed on Dec. 16 when the Mingo First United Presbyterian Church, 650 McLister Ave., again will be offering holiday nut rolls for sale.

It is a recipe honed over many years in the kitchen at the Mingo house of worship.

The nut rolls are priced at $9 each and can be picked up at the church that day from 3 p.m to 5 p.m.

"You can call the church at (740) 535-0309 or call me at (740) 282-8560," said church elder Jerry Ritter. "Calling orders in early insures you get all you want. There will be a limited number available on baking day."

Church to hold Advent dinner

The First Presbyterian Church of Wellsburg will hold a free Christmas Advent dinner from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20.

The church is at Ninth and Charles streets.

The meal will include burritos and a variety of salads and desserts. All are welcome.
