WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Lions Club helped to make Christmas merrier for many local children and to keep them warm throughout the year.
Paul T. Billiard, the club's president, said thanks to the support of many, the club provided 208 coats for children in need at local Head Start centers and primary schools.
The group also supplied a local family in need with boots, shoes and toys and were among many who donated gifts for the Bernie's Kids toy drive.

Billiard said the effort was supported through generous contributions from the Brooke County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, which gave $1,000; First National Bank and Hood's Pharmacy, which each donated $250; and many others.
"There were multiple donations of $100," he said, adding the assistance of Boscov's and K-Mart, both of St. Clairsville, also was vital to the project.
He said the Christmas assistance also was supported by various fundraisers held during the year, including the sale of snow cones during the city's Independence Day festivities and reverse drawing dinner.
Proceeds from such events go to various causes, including providing eyeglasses to people in need.
The group is planning a new fundraiser, its first Night at the Races, for Feb. 28.
