Barons fall to Muskies

NEW CONCORD - Franciscan University of Steubenville lost 83-48 Thursday in its first game in 18 days at Muskingum University.

"It was a really tough game," head coach John Lamanna said. "When things don't go your way, things just don't go your way. It just happened that quite a bit of things just didn't quite go our way this afternoon. We were really out of sorts from the tip, it wasn't anything Muskingum did -it was more we were just a little off."

The Barons came out slow, not scoring until freshman Christian Duke's three-point jump shot two minutes in, while the Fighting Muskies had already put up seven points. The game continued similarly, with Muskingum scoring regularly and FUS struggling to knock down shots. The first half ended 43-26.

Freshmen guard Garrison Holmes and Duke each contributed five points in the first half, with junior Justin Horstman contributing four. Sophomore guard Timmy Schenk led the team in scoring in both halves including nine in the first.

FUS women earn win

BETHANY - The Franciscan University of Steubenville's women's basketball team won its second game of the season against Bethany College with a nail-biting last five minutes Thursday. Franciscan made a major comeback from being down 12 points in the final five minutes to winning the game 82-78.

"It was an awesome comeback," head coach Suzy Delaney said. "We were with them pretty much the whole game but we were down by about ten at half time."

A back-and-forth second half started with Franciscan down 42-32. Although the Lady Barons played a balanced game, they couldn't quite break the Lady Bison's lead until the very end.

"It's incredible effort after that whole game to turn up the pressure like they did in the end of the second half," Delaney said.

With five minutes remaining, Franciscan employed a full-court press and succeeded in grabbing steals and finishing with shot after shot to close the gap and put it in contention to win the game.

The difference for Franciscan came in its ability to finish their foul shots making 34 of 40.
